Overview

During my 12-week internship, I redesigned two core account management experiences affecting millions of players across League of Legends, Valorant, and other Riot titles. The actual work is confidential so I am unable to share the visuals and screens.

Project 1: Email Communication Preferences

The Challenge

Players encountered a disconnect between their account settings and email management options. While the main account settings offered limited email controls, the unsubscribe flow provided granular content filtering—creating an inconsistent experience.

My Role

I led discovery research and coordinated with cross-functional stakeholders, including the Riot Account development team, CRM, and marketing teams. Through these conversations, I balanced player needs with business requirements and technical feasibility.

Process & Deliverables
  • Conducted competitive analysis and user journey mapping

  • Designed multiple iterations of filtering systems that allowed players to customize email preferences by game and content type

  • Collaborated with team designers through weekly critiques to refine solutions

  • Delivered complete UX handoff documentation for visual design and development

Project 2: Account Verification

The Challenge

The absence of email verification created significant security vulnerabilities for player accounts, but backend complexities had prevented implementation.

My Role

I worked closely with the security team to understand technical requirements around verification methods (links vs. codes) and designed a solution that addressed both security needs and user experience.

Process & Deliverables
  • Researched verification best practices and security standards

  • Created user flows and wireframes through to high-fidelity prototypes in Figma

  • Delivered production-ready designs for development handoff

Reflection

Some feedback and things I learned are to always double check and think about every state of an interaction. For example, remembering to show error and success states and all instances that they may occur. Additionally, when designing new flows it is important to follow existing design systems, but it is also important to recognize when you have to create a new design component to prevent wrong affordances and confusion with the user.

After the internship, I was able to appreciate methodical and evidence based thinking because all my design decisions were backed up by testing or were effective because of data. As a player myself it was important to stay "player" focused and view interations in that manner.

Overall, it was a valuable learning experience and I always felt like I was making impactful contributions. I was able to confirm my passion for UX Design and work on experiences that would eventually affect players directly.
